I didn’t hear Christian come into the room during the night, but he was splayed face down atop the covers of his bed when I woke up in the morning, wearing nothing but his boxers. I checked the time and then hauled myself out of bed to shower without making much effort to keep the noise down, though I was at least nice enough to leave the lights off. Christian was awake by the time I was finished, and he took my place in the bathroom without a word, cranking the shower back up.

I busied myself packing up my bag, and then I took it downstairs with me to go find some breakfast, figuring Christian would get the hint and follow once he was ready. Breakfast was set up in the hotel restaurant and was free, thankfully, so I loaded up my plate with some interesting looking pastries and a couple of chicken sausage links, and then I headed over to a table in the corner, setting my plate and bag down before I went back to get coffee. Spending a single night in Cairo and then jumping back to New Orleans time was going to be rough, as my body was still confused about what time it was and would only get more confused as the day went on, but that was a problem for future me, and present me was more concerned about pouring coffee down my throat as fast as humanly possible.

Christian joined me forty minutes later, looking perfectly put together with his hair styled and his suit nice and crisp, and he definitely turned a couple of heads as he made his way over to my table.

“Morning,” he said in a neutral tone.

“Morning,” I replied in the same way, and then he left his bag with me as he went to serve up his own breakfast.

We took our time eating since we didn’t need to rush to get to the airport, and once we finished, we returned our keys to the front desk. Christian called us a cab, though he was told it would be an hour until someone could get out to us. I checked the time again, worried for a moment, but we still had plenty of time to catch our flight, even with an hour delay.

“There are some shops this way,” Christian suggested and nodded down the street to our left. “I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel like sitting around, waiting.”

“Yeah, I guess not,” I agreed slowly, debating if I wanted to go with him or get some time alone, but in the end, I figured it was best if we stuck together since he spoke the language and was the one in contact with the cab company.

So, we set off down the street, walking side by side semi-awkwardly without saying anything. It took about ten minutes to reach the shopping district, but before long, street vendors began to crop up around us, along with shops with brightly colored signs and tables on the pavement displaying their wares.
